ROTARY BUSINESS
Gary Webster has two money motions after 2nd readings.
  • Motion number 1: The Community Service committee makes a motion to approve a $5000 donation to Simon House, the group that spoke to our club on March 16, 2022. The donation will go towards purchasing 5 bed frames and mattresses for Simon House to replace existing broken down on April 6, 2022. The first reading of the motion occurred on March 23, 2022, the second today April 6, 2022. Seconded by Gary Williamson. The vote passed unanimously.
  • Motion number 2: The Community Service committee makes a motion to approve an application for a $7500 District Grant for RY 2021- 2022 before May 1, 2022. The District Grant will be added to a $2500 donation from the club. The $10,000 donation (assuming the District Grant is approved) will go to the Children’s Cottage development in Bowness. We hope the money is sufficient to cover the cost of furnishing one room. The first reading of the motion occurred on March 23, 2022, the second today April 6, 2022. Seconded by David Brinsmead. The vote passed unanimously.

Subsequent Executive action:
The CSC has proposed the second motion below which needs Executive approval.  Given that competition for funds in the district is expected to be significant, it would be great if we submitted the application ASAP and Executive approval is required for that to happen.  I’d like to suggest we conduct an emailed vote to approve this rather than wait for an executive meeting.  If someone can second the motion and all members vote on it, I think we will meet our obligations.

MOVED:
  • RCCC approve the submission of an application for a District Grant to donate $2500 in club funds and $7500 in District funds to the Children’s Cottage development in Bowness.
Anil Jain has three motions after 2nd readings. Seconded by Irene Osteneck

  • Safe Water Tolima Phase 5 – This project is being done in collaboration with the RC of Nueve Ibague.  As indicated by the title, the club is very familiar with biosand filters and the need for them in the area.  This project will fabricate and install approximately 300 residential biosand filters, helping approximately 1200 people avoid illness caused by parasites in the untreated drinking water.   The total cost of the project is $34,000US and we will be donating $4200US which will (hopefully) be accompanied by a DDF grant of $15,000US. We are working this project along side the Canadian Association for Participatory Development (CAPD), a charity which is supported by Bob Wiens of the Stampede Park Club.  This project has been budgeted.  I move that the club approve a donation of $4200US for this project.   Passed
  • Safe Water Santa Rosa de Cabal Phase 2.  Again, the project is a continuation of work already started by the club in Santa Rosa de Cabal which we sponsored with a Global Grant.  Approximately 280 filters will be manufactured and installed in rural areas around Santa Rosa de Cabal, helping an estimated 1700 people avoid parasitic infections causing diarrhea.   Our $4200US donation should attract another $15,000US in DDF from District 5360 to support the total project cost of $34,000US.  This project also involved CAPD.  This project is budgeted.  I move that the club approve a donation of $4200US for this project.   Passed
  • Rotary Project – Dental Clinic In Sarurpur, India. This project is being done in collaboration with the RC of Mujarffer Nagar, India.  We have done 4-5 projects with this club now, some at the Maya Devi Charitable Hospital and some outside. All projects have been executed quite successfully. The Maya Devi hospital has hosted four dental and eye camps over the last ten years. However the demand for such services far exceed what a camp can provide. This project will leverage the hospital facilities to establish a permanent dental clinic to provide services to the community. In this community, outside the camps we have hosted, no one has ever seen a dentist. Two years ago, we had facilitated a camp by an Edmonton-based NGO which strongly recommended to create a permanent clinic. The total cost of the project is US$31,000.  International Service Committee has approved to contribute US$4,200 from the next Rotary Year’s budget towards a DDF and Global Grant. I  move that the club approve a donation of $4200US for this project from the 2022/23 budget.  Passe
Al Muller that the Stampede Parade is a go, and we have 700 seats. Marketing is different, and we need to broadcast more on our own. Price TBD past was $35. Need to get on our website.

GUEST SPEAKER – Dr. Eddy Lang, Impact of COVID
Where are we in the 6th Wave with the resurgence of Omicron BA2 Variant?
  • Common measurements include CHI Covid Tracker and waste water testing 3 times per week. All numbers increasing significantly.
  • Internally, the hospitals rely on tracking of nurses that cannot work; which tends to be a quicker and more reliable leading indicator. Currently 30% are unable to work
  • Hospitalization has dropped in half from the 5th wave
  • These numbers indicate that the number of people getting sick will increase, but the severity of COVID pneumonia is about half of previous outbreaks. The virus is learning to not kill the host and adapt to survive.
  • New strains are being discovered in other jurisdictions in Europe and South Africa.
  • The move from Pandemic to Endemic is now being proposed by pharmaceutical companies such as Sinopharm and Pfizer indicates impacts are getting lesser.
Greatest Learnings from the Pandemic
  • Alberta has not lost a soul to influenza in the last two years. Typically, 15% of people that contract the flu succumb when a breakout occurs.
  • Most years, we loose 1,500 people to influenza.
  • Chronic Pulmonary is usually the biggest killer is down 50% since COVID
  • The Common Cold has significantly been suppressed.
  • Asthma cases are down 50%
  • Similarity between COVID, flu, common colds is the success of the following:
    • HAND WASHING
    • STAY AWAY FROM BIG CROWDS
  • THESE SIMPLE REMINDERS WORK!
Dr. Lang will look to areas where Rotary and Health Care can partner.
He would like to come back and present again prior to a public forum scheduled for June, and invites us to attend

SERGEANT – Russell Kane
Jim Jenkinson was unable to report last week and sent out request.
The presentation from John and Cindy brought into focus more of the important work Rotary does and in this case our Club in particular. Therefore, my shift is to encourage each of us to put $5.00 into our pot;  have the club match it and gift that to the “ YOUQUEST “ organization.

Russ doubled down, if you plan to gift to the cause great. If not, then $10.

NEXT WEEK – Howie Shikaze and the Foothills Neo Natal ICU
