Jim Jenkinson introduced Speaker Trish Josephs BSc., M.A. Director, Applied Research & Innovation at
SAIT. Trish introduced us to the work SAIT and 7 other Canadian institutions (NAIT, Ryerson, etc.) are doing to help commercialize and scale up research in Alberta. She also talked about Calgary’s “The Platform Innovation Centre”. This is some fantastic stuff being done to build business transition in Calgary, Alberta and across Canada. We have had the CEO of this organization speak to us this year.
Applied research focuses on solving problems versus basic research
Her group of staff work in the green bldg at SAIT 55,000 sf. Canada’s largest “Living Lab” is at SAIT
They focus on these key areas with U of C:
1) Innovative IT Technologies
2) Environmental Technology
3) Energy CERCU
4) Advanced Manufacturing
5) Unmanned Systems (drones
The have:
- $8.1 million in funding
- 1,000+ student researchers
- 400+ prototypes developed
